Over 80,000 Enjoy Free Bus Rides During Khmer New Year

Phnom Penh, April 18, 2024 – Phnom Penh, April 18, 2024 – In celebration of the six-day Khmer New Year holiday, which concluded on April 17, more than 80,000 workers and residents took advantage of free bus services provided by the Phnom Penh Capital Administration, traveling within the city and to their hometowns in the provinces.

Mr. Met Meas Pheakdey, spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Capital Administration, reported that this year's free transportation services saw a 35% increase in usage compared to last year, with over 20,000 more passengers. Siem Reap and Battambang provinces recorded the highest number of travelers, with approximately 25,000 and 10,000 residents respectively availing themselves of the free transit.

"The transportation operations during the New Year were smooth and safe, without any significant issues," said Mr. Met Meas Pheakdey. He added that the community expressed profound gratitude towards Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Phnom Penh Capital Administration for continuing the tradition of offering free transportation, which greatly assists many in visiting their families during this festive season.

In an effort to ease the financial burden of holiday travel, the Phnom Penh Capital Administration deployed a total of 455 buses. Of these, 60 buses were designated for routes within Phnom Penh, while the remaining 395 facilitated travel between the city and various provinces, ensuring a seamless journey for residents returning to Phnom Penh post-celebration.
